A massive demonstration for democratic reform took place on Tiananmen Square by Chinese students in April, 1989. It's purpose was to mourn the death of former Communist Party Chairman Hu Yaobang. The protests started after the death of Hu on April 15 and was violently stopped on June 3 and 4, 1989. It is estimated that the death toll was about 400 - 800 civilians and soldiers. One of the most famous stories of this event was when an unknown civilian carrying shopping bags stood in the way of three tanks. When the tank would move to the it's right, the man would take a step to his left. When the tank would turn to it's left, the man would step to his right to get in the way.

Mausoleum of Mao Zedong

The Final Resting Place of Mao Zedong
"This the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death [on September 9th, 1976]. Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. ". - Wikipedia

This building is located in the center of the square and people line up in huge lines to see the former chairman each day. They often pay tribute with flowers which can be rented at the entrance on the north side. It was build right after he died and was completed almost a year later. While Mao himself wished to be cremated, he was embalmed. At the time China didn't have the technology to embalm him for public display, so they got some help from Vietnam to allow viewers to see his body.
